Engraven Privacy Policy
Engraven is made by Sedona Tech Solutions LLC, based in the Sedona / Verde Valley area of Arizona, USA. If you have any question about this policy or your data, write to support@engraven.app.
The short version
Engraven is a Bible memorization app with no account and no sign-up. Your verses, your progress, and what you tell the app about yourself are stored on your phone. Engraven itself sends only four kinds of data off your phone: what the AI coach needs to write a reply, and only after you turn the coach on; a reply you report, with the screen it appeared on, the reason and any note you add; a short list of anonymous usage events, which you can turn off; and, each time the app starts, whether or not you subscribe, an anonymous ID that our subscription service, RevenueCat, uses to check whether Premium is active. We don't show ads. We don't sell data. We never will.
What stays on your phone
Everything you do in Engraven is kept in a database on your phone: the verses and decks you're memorizing, your notes, your review history and streak, your settings, your conversations with the coach, and your progress in every practice mode, game, and Listen session. Your name and your routine are stored only on your phone. The reason you wrote in your own words is never stored or sent. We never receive a copy of any of this.
Daily reminders, if you turn them on, are scheduled by your phone itself. Their text shows wherever your phone shows notifications, including the lock screen.
One exception to "only on your phone": if your phone backs up app data (iCloud Backup on iPhone, or Android's backup to your Google account), that backup can include Engraven's data. Apple or Google holds it under your account, not us.
Speech and the microphone
Speak it mode uses your phone's microphone and its built-in speech recognition (Apple's on iPhone, Google's on Android), and Engraven asks your permission the first time. Depending on your phone, Apple or Google may process that audio on the phone or on their own servers, under their own privacy terms. Engraven never receives or keeps a recording of your voice. When Engraven reads text aloud, it uses your phone's built-in voice.
The AI coach
Engraven's coach, the Scribe, is optional, and it is off until you turn it on. Before the coach writes anything, the app shows you what it sends and asks you to turn it on; nothing is sent before you do. You can turn it off any time in Settings with the switch "The Scribe replies using AI.", and from then on nothing about your practice leaves your phone for the coach. Memorizing, every practice mode, and your review schedule all work without it.
When the coach is on, each time it writes something for you the app sends our coach service:
- What you type to the coach (in chat, Quiz me, or Teach it back), plus the last few messages of that conversation so the reply makes sense.
- A short summary of your practice: your goals; your answers and results from setup and "Discover how you learn" (including an age range and an accessibility note, if you gave them); your daily-minutes target; how many verses you have and how many are due; your streak; your recent accuracy; your deck names; the coach persona you picked; and a few plain sentences the app has worked out from your practice, like the hour you tend to remember best.
- Verse references only, like "Romans 8:28", with simple numbers such as how many words a verse has. Never the verse text. When the coach quizzes you, it is told where in the verse you stumbled, what kind of word it was, and at most that word's first letter.
The coach is never sent your name, the reason you wrote in your own words, your routine, your notes, or any account, device, or advertising identifier. If something you type reads like you might be in crisis, the app does not send it to the coach at all; it answers with a fixed message pointing you to people who can help.
Our coach service runs on Twilio's serverless platform and passes each request to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the coach's replies. Anthropic handles these requests as our service provider, under its commercial terms, which do not allow it to train its models on them. Our coach service does not store your messages. Its logs record errors and, when a safety check catches a reply that looks like quoted Scripture, short excerpts of that reply (60 characters at most each).
Reporting a coach reply
You can report any reply the AI wrote. A report sends our coach service the text of that one reply, where it appeared (for example, chat or a tip), which coach persona wrote it, the reason you picked, your note if you wrote one, and the app version. Your note is left out if it reads like you might be in crisis; the app shows you ways to reach help instead. A report never includes the rest of the conversation or your practice summary. Reports are recorded in our coach service's logs so we can review them. If you're offline, a report waits on your phone and is sent later, and only while the coach is on.
Usage data (analytics)
Engraven can send a short list of anonymous usage events through Firebase Analytics (a Google service), so we can tell whether the app is actually helping people and fix what isn't working. You decide: the switch "Share anonymous usage data" in Settings is on unless you turn it off. When it's off, Engraven sends no usage events and tells Firebase to stop collecting. Today only the Android app uses Firebase Analytics. The iPhone app sends no Firebase analytics at all, neither these events nor anything Firebase would record on its own, because it does not include Firebase's setup.
The events Engraven sends are: the app was opened; the first time you add a verse (with only a coarse label for where you added it from, like "onboarding" or "library"); the first time you finish a review; the first time you use the coach (with only which coach feature it was); your streak reaching 3, 7, 30, or 100 days; your free-tier verse count nearing or reaching the 25-verse limit; the Premium paywall being shown or closed (with only a coarse label for which free-tier limit triggered it, like "verse cap" or "coach chat", and whether the plans loaded); a purchase was started, completed, or failed (with which plan, and on failure only a coarse category like "offline" or "payment declined", never the store's own error text); and a purchase was restored (with only whether Premium was found). That is the entire list of events Engraven sends.
On Android, Firebase also records some things on its own: a random identifier for this installation of the app; your device model, operating system, and app version; your approximate location, worked out from your network address at about city level; and a few automatic events, such as the first time the app is opened and how long you use it. None of this includes the verses you're memorizing, anything you type, your deck names, or your name, and Engraven does not collect your phone's advertising identifier.
Subscriptions and payment
Premium is a subscription sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play, at $6.99/month or $39.99/year in the US (your store shows the price in your own currency before you buy). We never see or store your payment details: Apple or Google handles the payment under its own privacy policy. On both iPhone and Android, we use RevenueCat, a subscription service, to check whether your Premium is active. Each time the app starts, whether or not you subscribe, RevenueCat receives an anonymous ID it creates for this installation, your purchase and subscription data from Apple or Google (for example, that Premium is active and when it renews), and basic technical details such as the app version. It never receives your name, email, card number, or billing address.
Crash reports
Engraven has no crash-reporting tool of its own. If you have chosen in your phone's settings to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple or Google may pass us crash reports under their own terms; these don't include your name.
The companies that handle data for us
Four companies receive data from Engraven, each only for the job described above: Twilio (runs our coach service), Anthropic (writes the coach's replies), Google (Firebase Analytics), and RevenueCat (subscription status). Each is bound by its terms with us to protect that data at least as well as this policy does, and to use it only to provide its service to us. Apple and Google also handle app downloads, payments, speech recognition, and backups under their own privacy policies.
No ads, no data sale, ever
Engraven has no advertising and no ad SDKs of any kind. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to anyone, for any reason. This is a permanent commitment, not a launch-phase promise.
Children's privacy
Engraven is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app asks for no email, birthdate, or photo, and the first name it asks for is optional and stays on the phone. "Discover how you learn" does offer "Child" as an age range, because families sometimes practice together, and that range is part of the coach's summary if the coach is on, so we ask parents to keep personal details out of anything typed to the coach. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, write to support@engraven.app and we will delete any of it we hold.
Deleting your data, and your choices
- Delete a verse or a deck in the Library. A deck that belongs to a whole-book plan you are still working on is kept while that plan is active.
- Delete everything: uninstall Engraven. On iPhone, choose Delete App (Offload App keeps your data). On Android you can also tap Clear storage on Engraven's page in your phone's app settings. A backup your phone already made is managed in your phone's backup settings.
- Coach and usage data: turn off the coach, or "Share anonymous usage data", in Settings at any time. We don't store your verses, your progress, or your coach conversations, so there is nothing of that to delete on our side. For anything in our coach service's logs, including a report you sent, write to support@engraven.app.
- Your rights: wherever you live, including California (CCPA) and the EU (GDPR), you can ask us what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, by writing to support@engraven.app. For most of Engraven there is nothing for us to look up, because your data never leaves your phone.
Changes to this policy
If how Engraven handles data changes, we'll update this policy and change the effective date above. We won't quietly narrow your privacy after the fact.
